Enhancing Battery Safety, Training and Compliance with CHEMTREC

Today, we celebrate National Battery Day, honoring the innovation of batteries and their transformative role in our daily lives and global trade. Did you know the journey of batteries began in 1800 when Italian physicist Alessandro Volta invented the first true battery, the voltaic pile? Fast forward to 2025, and batteries are now compact and essential to our daily lives.

With their importance continuing to rise, it's crucial to enhance safety, emergency, compliance, and training procedures to safeguard individuals, the environment, assets, and reputation . At CHEMTREC, our mission is to deliver innovative solutions for those who work with, transport, or just want to know more about batteries.

Emergency Response

Under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), shippers are required to provide a 24/7 monitored emergency contact phone number on shipping papers for any hazardous materials. This number must be easily accessible to responders and knowledgeable about the specific battery type being shipped.
CHEMTREC supports this regulatory requirement by offering 24/7 emergency response. In the event of an incident, CHEMTREC is prepared to guide your team through mitigating the situation effectively. In addition, all data is stored and accessible via the customer portal, allowing you to identify trends and gain insights into incident data.

Safety Data Sheets

Most standard batteries don't need a Safety Data Sheet (SDS); however, OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard requires that any hazardous chemicals be labeled and have an SDS for employers and their employees. If an incident occurs with the product containing a battery, the employee should be able to easily retrieve the SDS. So, it's a good idea for battery manufacturers to have an SDS ready just in case it is requested.
Additionally, the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) says that facilities need to keep and submit SDS for hazardous chemicals to local emergency planning committees and fire departments. These regulations help aid those working with batteries so that they are handled, used, and disposed of safely, while guaranteeing that any hazards are effectively communicated through SDS.
At CHEMTREC, we offer comprehensive Safety Data Sheet solutions, ranging from authoring, management, and distribution. Our services facilitate easy compliance, meeting the highest industry standards.

Lithium Battery Test Summary Reports

According to the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria for the Transport of Dangerous Goods section 38.3, lithium batteries must pass stringent testing before being transported. After testing is completed, the reports must be made available by the manufacturer and distributor to verify that the batteries have passed all required testing. These reports must also be made available to anyone involved in the transportation of lithium batteries.
To meet this regulatory requirement, CHEMTREC has developed the CRITERION Lithium Battery Test Summary Management System. Supporting your organization in streamlining the process of obtaining, distributing, and storing UN 38.3 battery test summary reports.

Training

In recognition of National Battery Day, CHEMTREC is offering a 20% discount on the Shipping Lithium Batteries and Cells Training online course from February 17 to February 19. This self-paced course meets U.S. DOT training requirements for individuals responsible for packaging, marking, labeling, or loading lithium battery shipments through all modes of transportation.
