Updated: Shipping Lithium Batteries and Cells Online Training Course
CHEMTREC reviews all our online hazmat training courses annually and updates are made as needed. While some courses may not need changes, or changes are more minor, our 2025 Shipping Lithium Battery and Cells course was meticulously reviewed and updated to address the evolving regulatory landscape, providing you with the knowledge necessary to ship lithium batteries with confidence.
This course is a fantastic resource for any company that ships lithium batteries, including lithium batteries that are packed with or contained in the equipment they operate. Upon completion of the course, students will be knowledgeable about shipping both small, excepted cells and batteries (e.g., lithium-ion batteries with a watt-hour (Wh) rating less than 100 Wh) as well as high energy, fully regulated cells and batteries.
What’s New in the 2025 Course?
Our updated course includes additional content on shipping lithium batteries, incorporating relevant regulatory changes that ensure you are compliant with the latest standards. Here are some key updates:
- State of Charge Limitations: The 2025 regulatory changes recommend that lithium-ion batteries packed with and contained in equipment be shipped at no more than 30% state of charge (SOC). This is to mitigate risks associated with shipping fully charged batteries.
- Upcoming 2026 Regulation: Starting in 2026, it will be mandatory for lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment to be shipped at no more than 30% SOC. For those contained in equipment, this will remain a recommendation rather than a requirement.
- UN Performance Packaging Exception: The updated training course explains the UN Performance Packaging exception for lithium cells and batteries that exceed 12 kg and have a strong, impact-resistant outer case. This is crucial for shipping larger and more robust battery types safely.
- Sodium Ion Batteries Introduction: A brief introduction to the upcoming new entries for sodium ion cells and batteries, providing an insight into emerging battery technologies.
Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to the field, our updated course is an invaluable resource. If you haven’t completed a lithium battery training course in the last two years, now is the perfect time to return for a refresher.
