LyondellBasell Enables Expansion of CHEMTREC HELP Awards, Joins Dow to Underscore Industry’s Commitment to Responders

WASHINGTON (May 30, 2024) — The American Chemistry Council (ACC) proudly recognizes LyondellBasell for joining an esteemed list of corporate sponsors for the upcoming 2024 CHEMTREC® HELP (Hazmat Emergencies Local Preparedness) awards. The LyondellBasell sponsorship will enable CHEMTREC to expand the reach of the program, and for the first time, make six (6) HELP Awards, at $10,000 each, available this year to volunteer fire departments.

As a leading global chemical company, LyondellBasell has demonstrated a strong dedication to promoting safety, sustainability, and protecting the environment throughout the industry. Its partnership with CHEMTREC on the HELP awards was a good fit for their global corporate citizenship program, Advancing Good, which focuses on advancing communities, planet, and tomorrow’s workforce.

"At the core of community safety is a partnership between innovative industries, CHEMTREC, and the first responder community,” said Andrew LaVanway, Chief Executive, CHEMTREC. “LyondellBasell today joins Dow in strengthening that partnership, while showcasing its continuing global commitment to Advancing Good.”

“The CHEMTREC HELP awards represent far more than just accolades or recognition—they symbolize a commitment to excellence, preparedness, and community safety,” added Chris Jahn, ACC President and CEO. “Sponsoring this $10,000 award showcases the commitment of LyondellBasell and Dow to proactive efforts in safeguarding communities, the environment, and the safety of first responders.”

ACC and CHEMTREC are also pleased to confirm that Dow reaffirmed their commitment to supporting emergency responders through the 2024 HELP Award. Dow was the first ACC Member to become a sponsor of a CHEMTREC HELP Award last year. The Haynesville Fire Department was selected from a group of finalists vetted by CHEMTREC and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC). The department, located in a rural town in north central Louisiana known as Haynesville, was first established in 1924. The Claiborne Parish has several communication “dead zones” in and around the department’s service area where no cell or internet service is available. The use of radios and pagers is paramount in a hazardous materials emergency, and the department was in short supply of them. Dow’s support of a $10,000 HELP award enabled the department to close the communication gap by purchasing radios for four of their fire trucks.

The HELP Award was established in 2019 and provides annual funding to volunteer fire departments to enhance their response capabilities and increase local preparedness to respond to and prepare for hazardous materials incidents. The $10,000 HELP Awards for volunteer departments can be equal to a third of their annual operating budget, making this award’s impact significant on their department’s abilities to purchase hazmat equipment or attend advanced training.
